Freedom Ocean Task Chair with Headrest
Comfort that follows your movement, with a dynamic headrest for the moments you lean back. Designed by Niels Diffrient, Freedom Ocean uses your body weight to balance its recline and support changes in posture. Choose from a curated Designer Selects upholstery range, two frame finishes and two synchronous arm styles.
A recline that responds to you
Freedom Ocean balances its recline using the sitter’s weight, reducing the need for separate tension adjustments and recline locks. The pivoting backrest follows changes in posture to maintain support as you move between focused work and a more relaxed position. Adjust the seat height and depth to your workspace, then let the chair move with you.

Head and neck support during recline
The dynamic headrest engages as you lean back to support the head and neck. Its vertical adjustment helps you establish a comfortable fit, while its movement follows the backrest through recline. This is the headrest model: the headrest is included with every configuration on this page.

Choose your arm finish
Both arm styles adjust in height together and move with the backrest, keeping support close as your posture changes. Choose standard Duron arm pads or Duron arms with matching upholstery. These choices change the arm-pad finish; they are not the separate Advanced Duron arm upgrade.

A smaller upholstery selection, easier to choose
Designer Selects brings together ten fabric and leather choices without the full textile catalogue. Explore Autumn 0191, 0131 and 0361; Vanir 0983 and 0443; Coda 2 0100 and 0116; Elle 0200; Elmosoft leather 99999; and Corvara Saddle leather. Original material swatches help you compare texture and colour. Screen settings, lighting and natural leather variation can affect appearance.

Who is it for?
Freedom Ocean with Headrest is a strong fit for long desk days, focused work and people who regularly lean back between tasks. Its integrated head and neck support suits home offices and executive workspaces. Choose a fabric or leather finish to complement your room, with reclaimed Ocean components for teams that prioritise recovered materials.

Assembly and your first adjustments
Place the base upright on the floor, lift the upper chair assembly using the handle on the back, and lower its underside opening onto the cylinder. Press the seat cushion down firmly, then sit in the chair to complete the connection.

Make the fit yours
- Seat height: use the lever beneath the right side of the seat. Aim for thighs level with the floor and feet supported on the floor or a footrest.
- Seat depth: lift the front-edge lever and slide the seat. With your back against the backrest, leave 2–4 in (5–10 cm) behind your knees, then release the lever.
- Backrest: hold its lower corners, squeeze the adjustment handle on the right and move the backrest to the height that supports your back comfortably.
- Arm height: lift both armrests to raise them. To lower them, place your hands as illustrated in the guide, roll your wrists toward you to release the mechanism, then lower and release at the desired height.
