World Task Chair with Mesh Backrest

Designed by Niels Diffrient, World pairs a light, three-panel mesh back with support that responds to your movement. Choose an airy Pinstripe mesh seat or a padded seat in the curated Designer Selects textiles, then select your frame and arm style.

Recline without retuning

World uses your body weight to balance recline. Move from upright work to a relaxed position without retuning a tension dial. The backrest also pivots to follow changes in posture.

Height-adjustable Duron arms attach to the backrest and follow its recline. Set them with your shoulders relaxed. Choose Armless for open sides and easier access close to the desk.

Breathable back, your choice of seat

The Form Sensing mesh backrest flexes around your shape, providing integrated lumbar support without a separate adjustment pad. Black frames have Pinstripe Black backs, grey frames Pinstripe Silver and white frames Pinstripe White. Choose matching suspension mesh for maximum airflow, or upholstered cushioning for a softer seat.

Our curated seat palette includes Autumn 0191 and 0131, Steelcut Quartet 0434, Hallingdal 65 0573, and Vanir 0373, 0983 and 0113—the seven textile colours used across Humanscale’s eight featured Designer Selects configurations. Every selected textile is offered with black, grey or white frames and with adjustable Duron arms or no arms. Original fabric swatches and exact front/rear views help you compare texture and placement.

A different feel for each textile

Autumn has a soft, layered weave in recycled polyester. Steelcut Quartet offers a soft mélange appearance with rich colour depth. Hallingdal 65 blends wool and viscose for a distinct woven texture. Who is it for?

World suits home offices, hybrid work and professional desks where a breathable back and simple fit adjustments matter. Choose mesh if you prefer a suspended seat and extra airflow; choose fabric for a padded, more tactile seat. Compare the dimensions with your body and desk. This standard-height task chair has no headrest or footring.

Your first adjustments

Set seat height with your feet supported, then slide the seat to leave space behind your knees. Position the optional arms with relaxed shoulders and lean back gently. The illustrated guide shows the controls and fitting sequence.

What is included

Your frame, arm style and upholstery identify the exact chair and supplier SKU. Mesh seats use matched frame/Pinstripe mesh colours; fabric seats use the selected Designer Selects textile.

Standard-height cylinder and multi-surface casters included; no headrest. Desks, monitors, footrests and other workspace accessories in photos are not included. Other finishes shown illustrate the World family.

The diagram illustrates the arm-equipped standard-height World. Armless choices omit the arms; upholstered seat depth differs from mesh-seat depth as stated above.

Materials & sustainability

Engineered polymers form the lightweight main structure; the cylinder and mechanisms include metal components. Optional Duron arms have cushioned pads. Standard-height cylinder and multi-surface casters are included.

The back is Pinstripe mesh matched to the frame: Black/Black, Grey/Silver or White/White. The seat is either matching suspended mesh without foam or upholstered foam in the selected textile.

Autumn: 100% recycled polyester, layered weave. Hallingdal 65: wool and viscose, with yarn-dyed texture. Vanir: dense, felted wool textile by Raf Simons. Steelcut Quartet: soft mélange upholstery textile by Giulio Ridolfo. The chosen textile name and code appear in Selected configuration.

Humanscale’s environmental claims and certifications refer to eligible World configurations; finishes and textile choices can affect material declarations. This is the World family, not an Ocean model.

This product is backed by Humanscale's official limited warranty, covering defects in materials and workmanship for the original purchaser.

Care & Maintenance

Vacuum mesh and fabric gently with a soft brush attachment to remove loose dust. Blot spills promptly with a clean absorbent cloth; avoid rubbing, over-wetting or soaking the foam. Test suitable cleaners in a hidden area and follow the textile manufacturer’s instructions.

For Autumn polyester, use gentle routine cleaning and remove cleaning residue with a clean, lightly damp cloth. Let upholstery dry completely before use.

Wool and wool-blend textiles (Hallingdal 65, Vanir and Steelcut Quartet) require textile-specific cleaning. Avoid harsh detergents and aggressive rubbing; seek professional upholstery cleaning for persistent marks.

Clean the frame, base, arm pads and metal or plastic parts with a soft damp cloth, mild soap if needed, then dry. Avoid abrasive products. Check accessible connections and casters periodically; contact Apex Stand for parts or service instead of dismantling the cylinder or recline mechanism.
